We all know that a link from another blog is a great link building step. If I’m to explain why I don’t add a link to my favorite blogs/sites at the sidebar where you usually see “Blogroll”, I’ll have to bring three main reasons: ranking loss, prominence, and due introduction.
I don’t do this and don’t recommend you to do it either. To explain in more details what I exactly mean by these three reasons, I’m going to attend to them one by one.
1) My Blog Will Lose Lots of Ranking with Sidebar Blogroll
Imagine I’ve posted a link to my favorite blog at the sidebar under blogroll. What happens is that such link will appear at all the pages of my blog. In other words, I’ve added a link to my favorite site/blog from all of my pages and decided to share the ranking of each individual page with my favorite site! Is this what we exactly want to do for each and every favorite site we link to?
I don’t think it would realistically be the intention of any blog owner to sacrifice his/her blog’s search engine ranking in favor of another site. Of course, the decision is yours, but it doesn’t seem rational to me to do so. Link building could be done in a way that both sides receive reasonable benefits.
2) A Link at Sidebar Blogroll Is of No Prominence
Look at the sidebar of your blog and the items placed there. Blog readers don’t look for the most important elements in that sidebar. I personally look for other features of the same blog at its sidebar. If I want to check the blog tag cloud, categories, subscription possibilities, etc, I will choose to explore the sidebar.
Now, I ask myself, “Should I add a link to my favorite blogs inside such a space? Don’t they deserve a better place?” I certainly prefer to allocate a separate page to my favorite blogs. This has got several benefits. When my blog readers are looking for other important topics or sections of my blog, they go to the other pages of my site. Among the pages, they will find the links to my favorite blogs/sites. This page is specially created for them. I have very few pages at my blog. One of them is entirely allocated to such sites/blogs. Doesn’t it show how much I care for them?
3) I Will Introduce My Favorite Blogs/Sites Duly
I don’t think a single link, spiritless and abandoned at the sidebar could duly introduce the valuable blogs/sites I want to introduce to my blog readers. Do I care about those sites as much as I care about the link to the number of spam comments blocked or the calendar dates? Certainly not. My favorite blogs are my FAVORITE blogs. I’d rather them be introduced in a way that they deserve.
What I mean by saying so is that my favorite valuable blogs/sites should be introduced in a separate page with at least a few sentences that sufficiently explains what those blogs are and how they can be useful for my readers. I would write a few encouraging sentences to bring reasons why they’re my favorite blogs and could be my readers’ favorite blogs/site too. This, to me, is the due introduction of other blogs or sites. The receiving party will also get due benefit from such link building method.

1.) Stay on topic.
Opinions are generally accepted but the content of the items in the blog should all relate to a general theme. Unless you have an uncanny knack for wit, humor or cynicism, the majority of your readers will be interested in the content that relates to a specific defined theme or loosely defined area of interest. Most readers won’t care that you eat Cheerios for breakfast. They may, however, be interested in the fact that vinegar takes out stains and that toilet paper rolls make great wreaths. Define a topic and stick to it. This will ensure that you create a loyal following of interested readers.
2.) Stay informative.
If you are attempting to create the impression that you are knowledgeable about a specific industry or sector, be sure that you stay current on news. If you are endorsing a product or voicing an opinion, be sure to check your facts; your reputation is at stake. If you are offering an opinion, be sure to qualify your post, making it clear that the content is intended as an editorial.
3.) Old news is not news.
While blogging every day can be a drain, it is important that the information presented is current and accurate, writing an article or blurb about something that happened 6 months ago, will not be of interest to many. Telling your audience that Martha Stewart was convicted and will be going to prison, after her sentence is completed will make people question the value of your columns.
4.) Adhere to a schedule.
Create a schedule and stick to it. Realizing that blogging requires time and effort, don’t create unrealistic expectations and be unable to deliver. An occasional lapse or holiday is generally understood but readers returning to find stale, out-dated content are going to find another blog with similar content. New blogs and RSS feeds are popping up on a daily basis. If you have worked hard to develop an audience and a community you don’t want to lose them due to lack of communication.
5.) Clarity and simplicity.
Keep your posts and blog entries clear and easy to understand. Remember, the web is global and expressions, idioms and acronyms don’t always translate. Sometimes a little explanation goes a long way.
6.) Keyword-rich.
If the goal of your blog is to increase your visibility, include related keywords in the title of the blog. Use the title as a headline to attract interest. Each item post should have a title that will attract attention but still be relevant to the post. The title should be no longer than 10-12 words.
7.) Quantity matters.
In order to attract the attention of search engines, you will need to develop content and substance. A headline or simple sentence is not going to generate the interest of readers or help with search engine ranking. Be sure to archive old blog posts to develop a large portal of similarly-themed content.
8.) Frequency.
If your blog content is updated frequently, search engines will tend to spider the pages at regular intervals.
9.) Spell checking and proof-reading.
It only takes a few extra moments and can save you from having to make embarrassing explanations. Remember that whatever you publish on the Internet can be found and archived. Think carefully about what you post before doing so.
10.) RSS.
RSS will increase your blog’s reach. It is important that you include your blog’s content in an RSS feed to increase readership and distribution.
Most weblog audiences are small, but with time and regular updates audiences grow. Bloggers may never have more than a few hundred readers, but the people who return to regularly are generally interested in what you have to say.

Blogger.com, Wordpress.com, Weebly.com, Xanga.com, and LiveJournal.com are among the top most popular free blog hosts. Also, many social networking sites, like Facebook and Myspace have a section for writing notes or blog entries, so they too could be used as a blog, but these websites are not focused on blogging. Sometimes your internet provider, like Copper.net, will host blog accounts. Go to the member’s homepage or contact your ISP to see if this option is available for you.
2. Create a new account. In order for you to have a blog page, you’ll need an account with a username and password. Your username usually ends up being the primary name for the blog, e.g., “user_name.blogger.com” would be the url to your blog and probably show up in one or two places on the site. You’ll want to pick a username that fits you well and a password you can remember.
To create a new account, you’ll often see a “sign up” or “new member” link on the home page of the blog site. You can probably find a help section for more information. When you click to start a new membership, you will probably need fill out a form with some basic information, like your email address and what you want as your username and password. These forms are often very simple.
3. Select your blog title and (if available) subtitle. Blog titles are often where you can be creative, interesting, and unique, then the subtitle kind of explains what the blog is about. Think about what you want people to know about your blog from first glance. Is it going to be a little bit of everything? Are you going to focus on a specific topic or hobby of yours? Let people know in a unique and interesting way. You may want to browse through other people’s blogs for some ideas and inspiration—perhaps of what NOT to do too!
4. Choose your colors and layout. This is the part where you can really set the mood and create the first impression you want. When people first come across your blog, this will be the first things they’ll see. A dark background with deep colors can present a dark and mysterious mood, a bright colored layout can bring a happy or exotic feel, and a neat neutral design can come across in a professional tone.
Most host sites will have several predesigned themes to pick from. This is a good place to start, especially while you take some time to learn how to make design edits. Each site is different, so you’ll have to learn how to change backgrounds, colors, and widgets specifically on this site. There should be plenty of help pages to show you how to do everything. Don’t worry if you aren’t sure you what you want your layout to look like, you can always change it later! Sometimes its fun to go with a completely different look some months into your blogging.
5. Write your first entry! You can write a short piece just to see what it’ll look like and let people know you’ve just started, or you can jump right in with your first feature-length blog entry! Be yourself! Have fun and be creative. The important thing is expressing yourself, not worrying about how many people will read it! You can always make edits to posts later, but don’t forget, as soon as you hit “publish”, your entry will be open to anyone who has Internet service, so you might want to read it over for any grammar/spelling mistakes at least once before you publish!
